2. Why is Wool such a wonderful fiber?
Wool is a natural, breathing fiber that reacts to its environment, keeping you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. It also absorbs moisture without feeling wet and gently shapes itself to your body over time. Plus, done with the right processes and mills, it is a fabulous environmentally-friendly material: sheep are sheared for their wellbeing and we create magic with these fibers, for beautiful and long-lasting garments, and hours of knitting joy.
3. What does “Lambswool” mean?
Lambswool is the first shearing of a young sheep, usually around seven months old, which makes it naturally fine and soft. It’s softer than regular wool and makes our Lambswools range extra special.
Shearing is always done for the welfare and well-being of a sheep, like getting a haircut. The shearing process is of course done by skilled professionals, with respect for the animal (no mulesing practices). And after shearing, they go back to grazing in wide open spaces with their flock.
Our Lambswools range (Le Petit Lambswool, Le Lambswool, and Le Gros Lambswool) are spun in Scotland and finished in England from trusted mills, for a beautiful handfeel and long-lasting quality. With traditional savoir-faire and preparation.
4. What is the story behind your Silk & Mohair yarns?
The mohair adds softness and halo, while the silk brings shine and strength. Every skein reflects the lightness, airiness, and depth that only natural fibers can offer.
Our beautiful Silk Mohair yarns combine South African mohair from Angora goats and Chinese mulberry silk from Cocoons waste and leftover (making the process completely cruelty-free), then spun and dyed in Italy.
The colors in Le Petit Silk & Mohair are created to match with Le Petit Lambswool's color range, so they can be knit together and create the perfect nuance. The matching colors will carry the same name in both ranges (like for example 'Green Pink Turquoise'). Our color range in Le Petit Lambswool is our largest color range, and we are progressively extending our colors in Le Petit Silk & Mohair to match them.
5. Are your yarns suitable for sensitive skin?
Our Lambswool comes from young sheep, so it is naturally soft and smooth. If you feel very sensitive to wool, we suggest trying our Le Petit Organic Cotton or Cotton & Alpaca yarns: they are soft, breathable, and very gentle on the skin. And if you like Mohair, our Silk Mohair range (with Le Petit Silk & Mohair and Le Gros Silk & Mohair) are like clouds of softness and can even be worn directly on the skin.
6. Why don’t all your yarns carry certifications like RWS or GOTS?
Many of these farms follow the same principles as certified producers: animal welfare, responsible land use, and sustainable practices. But certifications like RWS or RAS can be costly and complex for smallholders. We rely on trust, long-term relationships.
8. What is “finishing” and why is it important?
“Finishing” is the final stage after spinning and dyeing. It gives the yarn its soft touch, strength, and balance. In England, our partner mills gently wash, full, and set the yarn to achieve that beautiful handle and drape for our Lambswools range. It is a quiet, traditional process that makes a world of difference.
9. How should I wash and care for my knits with your yarns?
We recommend hand washing in cool water with a gentle wool detergent (we love using the soap called 'Eucalan', and drying it flat, on a thick towel.
Natural fibers don’t need frequent washing, a gentle air-out is often enough.
Handled with care, your wool piece will last for decades 🤍
