Ashley Yousling - The Growth Ring Shawl

Ashley designed this beautiful shawl for Making magazine - the Forest issue (No. 8).

And she tells about the background for her gorgeous design :
“I grew up with the Olympic National Forest as my backyard, later moving to Northern California where we spent many of our weekends escaping the city for lush rolling hills and redwoods. Now I make my home in the forests of Idaho, surrounded by cedar, larch, birch, alder, and a variety of pines. Since I was a young child, the most fascinating discovery about trees were their growth rings and the stories they tell, much of them remaining a secret until the trees life has ended and a new incarnation has begun. From the moment we chose the theme for this issue, the idea for this simple yet expansive shawl emerged, representing the growth rings of not only trees, but also the growth in our own lives.”
